Ready for take off: Loulé aerodrome
ANA – “Aeroportos de Portugal” – has delivered the viability study for Loulé’s new aerodrome. Presenting the study to the borough’s mayor on 24th March, ANA’s representative said it was “a modern project, in line with current legislation, that would have all the necessary infrastructures to receive executive” as well as private aircraft. The future aerodrome will be located on land next to the «CIMPOR» cement factory – and will serve “general aviation” - in other words light planes and private jets.
A structure like this is much-needed in the region – as an alternative to the runway at Faro Airport, frequently choc-a-bloc with traffic during summer months.
It’s estimated that the new aerodrome could receive 15 per cent of Faro’s air traffic – roughly 6.450 flights per year. However Seruca Emídio, Loulé’s Mayor, doesn’t consider the project one that the council should undertake on its own – thus the partnership deal established with ANA that will be fundamental in “reducing costs and rationalising resources”.
